The Visigothic collection, which has always come under the direction of the National Museum of Roman Art, was set up towards the end of 1986 in the old church of Santa Clara. It was reorganised, as far as was possible in this building, pending its definitive relocation in a new building, the future Visigothic Museum. This is to be built by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports close to the Roman Theatre.
A number was assigned to each exhibit, as listed in the collection guidebook, for the visitors' information. Any pieces not on display were arranged suitably and the old topographical catalogue numbers were replaced with new ones, making them more accessible for use.
The Visigothic Museum has a warehouse service suitable for both large and small pieces, as well as for those found in the area of the Alcazaba.
